Unserdeutsch - FACES

2023

UNSERDEUTSCH solo exhibition at Konrad Fischer Galerie, Berlin (2024)

Unserdeutsch-FACES, consists of 12 individual portraits of the last Unserdeutsch speakers I met in Papua New Guinea and Australia in 2022. They are framed half-mirrored behind a Kinscem film and do not allow frontal eye contact. It is only possible to view them from a side angle, from the right or left.

Unserdeutsch is the only Creole language that has developed from German. It is an endangered language that is still spoken by around 70 people in Papua New Guinea and Australia.   What is Unserdeutsch ?
